Overview
The Tax Collector is responsible for the receipt and collection of all current and
delinquent taxes, assessments and fees which are remitted to the Finance Department.
Municipal taxes are only a portion of a property taxpayer's obligation. Bergen County
government and the Local Public School District develop and adopt their own budgets to be
funded by taxes. However, New Jersey's fiscal laws require the municipal
government serve as a billing and collection agency for these entities.
Real property taxes are due on February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1. There is a ten
calendar day grace period. Any real property tax payments received after the 10th calendar
day of the month will be considered late and interest will be charged. The interest rate
for late payment is 8% on the first $1,500.00 and 18% on the amount over $1,500.00.
A year end penalty is charged at 6% on all delinquent balances (including interest) in
excess of $10,000 not received by December 31. The tax bill provides additional
information.
New Jersey Law (NJS 54:5 et seq.)
requires all prior year delinquent taxes and municipal charges be sold at an annual Tax
Sale. The date for the sale of 2004 delinquencies will be June 17, 2004 at 11:00 am in the
Municipal Council Chambers. This sale will include all 2003 taxes and municipal charges
considered delinquent and related charges as accrued. The tax sale list will be published
in The Observer once a sale date has been determined. Affected property owners, mortgage
companies and all interested parties will be notified by mail.
To avoid publication of a
property owner's name and address, all 2003 delinquent municipal charges and all accrued
interest and penalties must be received. A separate check must be received for each
delinquent charge.
